Mukoujima tea farm is the source of our organic sencha.
Also called "Happy Mukoujima", the farm is situated just north of Fujieda Town on the Seto river in Shizuoka, Japan. They've been certified organic for over 20 years, producing Japanese standards with an ecology-first mindset.
First planted in 1982, the multi-generational garden is distinguished by their signature planting method: ippon-zitate, or "one tree method", where tea trees are planted further apart to allow for deep, robust root networks to form. The depth and expression of terroir in their teas speak to this.
Masayuki Sonoda (left) is our liaison to Mukoujima. Together, we collaborate on our yearly sencha, adjusting steam levels, cultivar ratios, and other variables to produce exceptional tea.
Masayuki is a committed organic farmer, working with a sincere reverence for the land he tills. He and his team all share a one-with-nature tea producing philosophy, making Mukoujima among the most ecologically forward-thinking among our partner farms.
